Journey from the past to the present and from heritage to habitat at the Ravenel Caw Caw Interpretive Center. This historic site was once part of several rice plantations and the home to enslaved Africans who applied their technology and skills in agriculture to carve the series of rice fields out of cypress swamps.
Caw Caw features former rice fields dating from the early 18th century, an important Stono Rebellion site, and thousands of naturalized tea plants from a 20th century tea farm. Walk the trails, with trail-side exhibits, and elevated boardwalks through wetlands. Explore the exhibit hall with interpretive displays featuring the natural and cultural history of the SC Coastal Plain.
Caw Caw is an actively managed wildlife preserve with 11 distinct coastal plain habitats; is a favored habitat for rare wildlife including American Alligators, Swallow-tailed Kites, Bald Eagles, and others; and is a birding hotspot for coastal South Carolina.
